FSU 33, Miami 20

Posted Oct 21, 2012

Florida State defeated Miami by the score of 33-20 Saturday night, handing the Canes their third straight loss. Despite the loss, however, Miami still controls its down destiny in the ACC Coastal Division race.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter against Florida State tonight but then were unable to maintain the lead, as the Noles went ahead just before the half and then ran away with the game in the second half.

After Denzel Perryman caused a fumble early in the game, Mike James scored from nine yards out for the first points of the game. James was Miami's best offensive weapon in this game, running for just 25 yards and the score but also gaining 75 yards through the air as a receiver.

After a Jake Wieclaw field goal to make it 10-0, Florida State scored 16 unanswered points by the time the third quarter was a few minutes in.

As has been the story of the entire season, Miami's defense was unable top stop the opposing running game. Despite losings its top running back - Chris Thompson - to injury in the first half, the Noles ran for 218 yards and three scores. FSU finished with 447 yards of total offense.

Stephen Morris was ineffective for most of the night after starting a game that many people didn't even expect him to play in. After not practicing all week following an ankle sprain against North Carolina last week, Morris threw for 223 yards, one touchdown, and one interception but the touchdown and a lot of the yards came in the final couple minutes of the game when it was already out of hand. It was a very gutsy effort by the Miami signal-caller.

The loss sends Miami to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in the ACC. The Canes still control their own destiny in the Coastal Division. If they can win their final three divisional games, which will begin the Thursday after next against Virginia Tech (and also games against Virginia and Duke), the Canes might just get another crack at their arch-rival after the regular season.
