Canes win shootout over Duke

The University of Miami defeated Duke by the score of 52-45 today in the 2012 season finale for the Hurricanes.

Freshman Duke Johnson had 188 of Miami's 646 total yards, as the Canes won a shootout at Duke today. Johnson was the most explosive player on the field, and finished with 176 rushing yards and three scores on just 16 carries. He also had a touchdown pass to Clive Walford that was taken off the board after a review.

Walford opened the scoring in the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown reception from Stephen Morris. The talented sophomore tight end finished the game with 99 yards on four catches.

Mike James, playing in his final game as a Hurricane, joined Johnson and Walford in scoring first half touchdowns when he ran one in from a yard out. It gave the Canes a 28-10 halftime lead. James finished the game with 67 yards on 17 carries but added 97 yards and a score on three catches, including a 72-yarder in the third quarter.

Miami's defense fell apart in the second half, giving up over 300 yards of offense and five touchdowns. The offense relied on big plays to make sure the Blue Devils never took the lead, or even tied the game.

In addition to long plays from James and Johnson, freshman receiver Herb Waters caught a short pass and took it 65 yards for a score. It was his only catch of the game. Morris completed 15-of-25 passes for 369 yards and three scores.

The win sent Miami's seniors out on a winning note. The Canes will finish the season with a 7-5 record, and a share of the Coastal Division title.
