Mario Cristobal is Back at UM

Posted Jan 10, 2013

The University of Miami announced the hiring of Mario Cristobal today. The former Hurricane player will serve as Associate Head Coach, and coach the tight ends for the Canes.

Mario Cristobal will be back on Miami's sideline in 2013. Head coach Al Golden announced the hiring of Cristobal today. He will serve as tight ends coach, and be the Associate Head Coach.

Current tight ends coach Brennan Carroll will move to coaching wide receivers and "take a larger role in the passing game" starting in 2013.

Cristobal brings a wealth of experience to the program. Born and raised in Miami, Cristobal played offensive line for the Hurricanes from 1989-1992. He played on the same teams as current linebackers coach Micheal Barrow, and played for current offensive line coach Art Kehoe.

Cristobal started his coaching career in 1998 when he became a Graduate Assistant under former coach Butch Davis. He spent a few years in that role before becoming tight ends/offensive tackles coach at Rutgers under Greg Schiano. He was Schiano's full-time offensive line coach at Rutgers for the 2003 season.

Cristobal returned to Miami in 2004 when he was hired by former coach Larry Coker. After spending two seasons coaching tight ends and one coaching the offensive line, Cristobal then became the head coach at Florida International University. He held that job until being let go after the 2012 season.

Cristobal led his FIU team to the Sun Belt Championship in 2010 and was generally considered one of the young college coaches in the entire nation.
