Canes add 4-star WR to 2013 class

Derrick Griffin is one of the nation's top-rated wide receiver prospects, and he signed with the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Derrick Griffin had been committed to Texas A&M for awhile but didn't sign with the Aggies on National Signing Day.

He took a recruiting visit to Auburn recently, and decided to sign with the University of Miami on Tuesday.

"A scary athlete," says Scout's Greg Powers in his scouting report. "A big-framed wideout who could grow in to a tight end as time goes by. He is an excellent athlete who gets off of the line well. When he splits out you know that hos coaches want to try to find a way to get him the ball. His size presents a huge mismatch and he can also beat double teams with relative ease. He makes good adjustments to the ball while it is in the air and he effortlessly plucks balls out of the air."

Notre Dame and Oklahoma are a few of the other schools who had offered the 6-5, 215-pound wide receiver from Roseberg (Terry) High in Texas.

As a senior Griffin caught 36 passes for 592 yards with 14 going for touchdowns. As a junior his numbers were similar with 37 receptions for 557 yards and 13 scores. In three years as a starter he caught 101 passes for 1,649 yards and 35 touchdowns.

A two-way standout, he averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game as a junior on the basketball court.
