Tigers complete the sweep

Clemson beat Georgia Southern 11-6 on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The No. 15 Clemson Tigers pounded out 14 hits in their 11-6 win over Georgia Southern at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers, who swept the series 3-0 and upped their winning streak over the Eagles to 13 games, improved to 37-15 on the season. The Eagles fell to 25-26 in 2013.

After the Eagles took their first lead of the series with a run in the top of the second inning, Clemson responded with five runs in the bottom of the second inning and cruised the rest of the way. The win was the seventh in a row for the Tigers, all within a seven-day span.

Tiger starter Zack Erwin (5-0) earned the win by tossing 5.0 innings. He allowed six hits and three runs with one strikeout.

Josh Stevenson (1-4), the first of seven Eagle hurlers, suffered the loss. He yielded eight hits, seven runs, and one walk with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.

In the top of the second inning, Stryker Brown drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on Tyler Avera's groundout. Kyle Streicher followed with a two-out double to left-center to plate Brown.

The Tigers responded with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Garrett Boulware led off with a single to left and Shane Kennedy reached on a bunt single. After both runners moved up a base on Tyler Krieger's sacrifice bunt, Jon McGibbon walked to load the bases, then Thomas Brittle blooped a single to left-center to score Boulware. Tyler Slaton grounded out to second to score Kennedy, then Maleeke Gibson lined a two-out double to left-center to score McGibbon and Brittle. Steve Wilkerson followed with another double to left-center to plate Gibson.

In the top of third inning, Chase Griffin flared a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on T.D. Davis' groundout to second. Robbie Dodds followed with a two-out single through the right side to score Griffin.

Boulware led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Krieger lined a one-out single to right field to score Boulware, then McGibbon lined a single to right-center to score Krieger.

Brown led off the top of the fourth inning with a walk and Avera singled through the right side. Streicher moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt, then Scooter Williams lined a sacrifice fly to left to score Brown.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Wilkerson led off with a walk and advanced to third on Steven Duggar's single to center. Two batters later, Kennedy grounded out to short to score Wilkerson.

Gibson led off the sixth inning with a single through the right side and Wilkerson walked. After Duggar reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs, Boulware lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Gibson. Two batters later, Krieger hit a two-out single up the middle to score Wilkerson.

In the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Joe Costigan drew a one-out walk on four pitches and pinch-hitter D.J. Reader walked after being down in the count 0-2. Pinch-hitter Mike Dunster followed with a single down the right-field line on a 1-2 pitch to score Costigan.

In the eighth inning, Dodd led off with a single through the right side and pinch-hitter Michael McClellan was hit-by-pitch. Brown singled up the middle to score Dodds, then Streicher hit a sacrifice fly to center to score McClellan.

In the ninth inning, Brent Pugh reached on a one-out single and scored on Dodds' two-out double to right-center.

Gibson, Duggar, Boulware, Krieger, and Brittle all had two hits apiece to pace Clemson's 14-hit attack. Gibson, Wilkerson, and Boulware added two runs apiece, while Gibson and Krieger totaled two RBIs apiece.

Griffin and Dodds had three hits apiece for the Eagles, who totaled 12 hits in the contest.

Clemson will play its last regular-season home game when it hosts USC Upstate at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday at 6:30 PM.
