May Recruiting Update: WR
Austin Roberts

Posted May 18, 2013

National Signing Day is still nine months away for the Class of 2014 but there's a lot going on. Read on to see the latest with Miami's recruiting efforts at the wide receiver position.

The Hurricanes signed two wide receivers in its 2013 recruiting class. Stacy Coley is expected to come in and make an early impact while Derrick Griffin is expected to spend a semester in prep school before trying to enroll in the spring semester.

With low numbers in last year's class the Hurricanes are making wide receiver a priority in the 2014 class.

Travis Rudolph committed to the Hurricanes during his junior season. At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, the Cardinal Newman standout is coached by former UM quarterback Steve Walsh. Unfortunately, he backed off the commitment recently and has taken a visit to Florida. The Gators seem like the top competition right now but it's far from over.

South Florida is loaded with quality receivers this year so the Canes are very active in their efforts outside of Rudolph. At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, Homestead's Ermon Lane is a tremendous talent. He's been to Miami a few times already and has a lot of interest in the Hurricanes right now. Alabama seems like the primary competition right now.

Johnnie Dixon (5-11/190) is one of the state's premier players, regardless of position. He's been to Miami two or three times already this year and seems to have a lot of interest. Florida, the school he grew up following, is likely the top competition right now.

Darrell Langham is a 6-foot-3 wide receiver from Santaluces High and landed an early offer from the Hurricanes. He has a lot of early interest. JoJo Robinson (5-10/175) committed to Florida State very early in the process but that never stopped Miami from recruiting him and the Canes seem to be in relatively good shape with him.

Two other in-state receivers have outstanding offers from Miami -- Taylor County's Moral Stephens and East Lake's Tay Scott. Both are likely longshots for the Canes, unfortunately.

The Hurricanes have nearly a dozen outstanding offers out to wide receivers from outside the state. The one that Canes fans should probably be paying the closest attention to is Austin Roberts. At 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, Roberts is the son of former Hurricane tight end Alfredo Roberts, and has been to the school a few times. The Indianapolis standout has Miami and Florida at the top of his list heading into the summer.

Malachi Dupre, Kd Cannon, Terry Googer, Eric Lauderdale, Jamil Kamara, Johnathan Lloyd, Trevion Thompson, and Jeff Farrar are other out-of-state receivers with offers but they will likely be tough for the Hurricanes to pull away from their home areas.
