Sophomore wide receiver Herb Waters caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Stephen Morris in the first quarter that began the scoring. Morris finished the game with 162 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception against a very good Florida defense.
After the Gators blocked a Pat O'Donnell punt later in the first quarter, Jeff Driskel scored on a nine-yard run. Driskel finished the game with 291 yards passing and 19 rushing. He also threw for one touchdown.
A Florida field goal in the third quarter narrowed the score to 14-9 heading into the fourth quarter. Miami's defense kept bending but not breaking. It created pressure and turnovers, and a sack and fumble led to a Duke Johnson 2-yard touchdown run late. Johnson finished the game with 59 yards on 21 carries.
A late Florida touchdown was followed by Miami recovering an onside kick. After a three-and-out, the Hurricanes gave the Gators back the football with less than 30 seconds left. More pressure from the front four helped seal the game at that point.
The win sends the Hurricanes to 2-0 on the season. The team will have next week off before returning to action against Savannah State at home in two weeks.
