Canes up to 6, 7 in polls

Posted Oct 20, 2013

Head coach Al Golden and his Miami Hurricanes improved to 6-0 Thursday night when they came back to knock off North Carolina. Today, the Canes earned their highest national ranking since 2005.

It seemed to be upset Saturday in college football this weekend, as six of the top 11 teams in the national rankings lost.

While Miami certainly didn't play its best football at North Carolina on Thursday night, it did something that only three other teams in the top 20 were able to do -- win on the road.

Miami's win over North Carolina combined with several nationally-ranked teams losing over the weekend has resulted in Miami being ranked the highest it's been in the polls since November of 2005.

The Canes are now ranked 6th in the USA Today/Coaches Poll and 7th in the AP Poll, both of which were released Sunday afternoon.

Alabama retained the top spot in both polls, while Oregon stayed at No. 2. Florida State, Miami's opponent in two weeks, is now third after dominating previously 3rd-ranked Clemson last night. Ohio State remained 4th in both polls. Baylor, which beat Iowa State, is now 6th and 5th in the two polls, respectively. Missouri, which beat Florida, is 5th in the AP Poll.

Virginia Tech, 19th and 16th in the two rankings, is the the only other remaining opponent for the Hurricanes that is currently ranked. The Canes play host to the Hokes one week after visiting 3rd-ranked FSU.
