Mike's Take: New OL commit

The University of Miami added another member to its 2014 recruiting class when Joe Brown signed with the Canes. Read on for a commitment analysis from CanesTime's Mike Bakas.

Joe Brown has signed with the Hurricanes as part of the Class of 2014.

What to like: At 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds, Brown is a massive two-way line prospect. He has played mostly on the defensive side of the ball the last two seasons and was actually the Defensive Player of the Year in his area this past season. In addition to his massive size, he's very strong and has tremendous lower body strength. Once he locks onto a defender, it's usually over. And, likely because of his defensive background, he plays with an aggressive streak. He really gets after his opponents. He has plus quickness off the ball, especially for someone his size. His coaches say he's a very competitive kid who is very coachable, too. Brown has the size and strength to play early on and the other intangibles to continue improving.

What may concern you: He lacks experience on the offensive side of the ball. Sure, the tools are there but the technique will need some cleaning up. He will need to re-learn the position in a lot of ways, which may limit his opportunities early in his career. His lateral quickness isn't ideal, and that's something that will have to improve once he gets here. He was a very lightly recruited kid, for whatever reason, and isn't a kid who could project as a tackle. He's strictly a guard, which also limits his upside some.

Bottom Line: After Reilly Gibbons flipped his commitment from Miami to Stanford in late January, the Canes came up short on the offensive line. They wanted five and only signed three a few weeks ago. Getting Brown gives them four, and they're likely still looking to add one more. Despite being a late signee who wasn't heavily recruited, Brown looks like a legit prospect who qualified late in the game and may be a nice sleeper addition to Miami's 2014 class.
