Star Athlete Favors UM

Sacking Alwan Lee wasn't the easiest thing for opposing defenses to accomplish last season. In over 200 pass attempts, the Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington quarterback was sacked just twice all season.

"I make people work for those sacks," Lee said. "That's something a lot of quarterbacks don't have. I might not be a 4.4 guy like some players but I think because of my instincts, I am pretty fast on the field and that's where it counts the most."

At 6-feet and 180 pounds, Alwan Lee is coming off an impressive junior season. He finished the year with over 1,500 yards passing and added close to 500 rushing. His season ended against Seffner Armwood in the semifinals, a game in which Lee had 425 yards of total offense and five touchdowns.

Lee, who carries a 3.2 GPA and currently has a 15 ACT score, says it's his motivation on the field that separates him from a lot of other players.

"I'm just motivated to win more than most guys," he said. "I've won my entire life. I hate losing and I do whatever it takes. I think I'm the best player on the field every time I'm on it. I've been playing football all my life and it's just become natural for me."

The talented quarterback, who also plays basketball and runs track, is open to the possibility of playing wide receiver at the next level as well.

"I understand that some college coaches may think I could make a better receiver and I'm OK with that," he said. "Whatever gets me on the field, I'm down with that. I just wanna play."

Lee recently attended the University of Miami summer camp, where he was named the camp's Most Improved Player.

"Everything went well at the camp," he said. "I wanted to go out there and show the coaches what I could do. I learned a lot from Coach Werner. He's a real nice guy and helped me a lot. It was fun competing with Jared Fayson. He's faster than me but he isn't as accurate. I think he knows that he'll probably be a receiver when he goes to Miami."

Two other players made the biggest impression on Lee at that camp.

"I really liked throwing to Tim Brown, even though he only came for a day," he said. "He was really fast and he caught everything in sight. He was awesome. The DB from Pace (Tervaris Johnson) was awesome, too. He was huge and just looked real good in all the drills and everything. He was beating up on everyone."

Lee went to the camp with several teammates, two of whom are also being recruited by Miami -- according to Lee. Those players are DE/LB Joseph Jackson and CB Chavez Grant.

Lee, on the otherhand, claims five written scholarship offers at this point.

"I have them from South Florida, the University of South Carolina, Akron, the University of Houston, and Boston College," he said. "My top five would be UM, South Carolina, Houston, South Florida, and Tennessee."

The Hurricanes are the clear favorite, Lee said.

"That's where I wanna go," he said. "That's the offer I want. If they want me to play another position, I'll do it. They're a great program every year. They produce great players. It's close to home and plus I like how Coach Larry Coker prepares his players both physically and mentally every year for the challenges they'll face. He cares about his players and that means a lot. If I don't get Miami's offer, I'll look at some other options."
