Travis Timmons thought for sure his Gainesville (Fla.) Buchholz team would be headed to the state…
Two-Way Lineman Has UM Connections
It's on the defensive line, however, that Timmons expects to play at the college level.
"As a D-Tackle, most guys are 6-1 or 6-2 in there," he said. "Most of them try to bull rush people. I'm 6-5 and I have speed. I get off the ball faster than most guys inside. I have a quick first step. Offensively, my size (at tight end) creates mismatches."
At 6-foot-5 and 278 pounds ("I was 275 before the cheesecake I just finished," he said laughing), Timmons is having a strong senior campaign.
"I'm our team's second leading receiver on offense," he said. "On defense I had four sacks and 16 tackles for loss."
Travis Timmons, who is just the second four-year letterman at his high school, has been playing football since he was seven. He used to play quarterback before he put on more weight.
Timmons, who carries a 3.0 core GPA and scored a 1190 on the new SAT (which equals a 793 on the old one), has been getting lots of recruiting interest.
"All three of the big Florida schools call each week," he said. "They've all sent me an offer. Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and Georgia are also coming hard. I'll look at a few of them but my family would like me to stay in-state."
The talented defender talked about each of the three Florida powers.
"I like Florida State a lot but there's no guarantee that Bobby Bowden will be there the whole time I'm there," he said. "At Florida, they're stacked on defense right now and they've been struggling lately. I'm not sure how that's gonna work out. With Miami, I talk to my cousin (George Timmons) every day. I talk to Coach Soldinger all the time. I know Yatil Green, who played at Miami. I've been watching them closely. They've been doing their thing. They have a fast defense and that's what I like to see."
The Hurricanes began recruiting Timmons during the spring.
"Coach Soldinger came to our spring game against Union County and CJ Spiller," he said. "I had 3 or 4 tackles on him and after that Miami started calling. Then I guess they saw me at a camp during the summer and Coach Kehoe liked me on offense. I sent them my film and they offered me not too long after that."
Timmons said he hopes to attend one of UM's next two home games.
