CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami LHP Manny Miguelez (5-4, 3.92 ERA) is the probable starter for today's game against Wright State at 12:00 p.m. as the Hurricanes go for the sweep.
The
Miami
Hurricanes took game two last night 14-1 in the most lopsided victory of the season since the season opener on January 28 when they defeated FIU, 17-3.
1B
Yonder Alonso
hit a three-run homer in the first inning and 3B
Danny Valencia
had three runs batted in as he returned to the lineup after a violation of team rules, which kept him out of the 4-2 victory on Friday.
The first two starters of the series, LHP
Scott Maine
and RHP
Carlos Gutierrez
, have combined for 11 2/3 innings pitched allowing just two runs as the new rotation is in place.
Now it is up to LHP
Manny Miguelez
to follow suit as he returns to the mound as a starter after a week off.
Miguelez has primarily been the Saturday starter this season until last week.
"Whenever I am going to start I think of it as the same way. I don't think of it as Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or whenever," Miguelez said. "I just have to go out there and do my job."
Last Sunday against N.C. State, Miguelez came out of the bullpen and pitched two innings giving up two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
"I think I pitched all right at N.C. State," said Miguelez, who exited early as a precautionary measure due to arm tightness, "It was hard for me coming out of the bullpen, but I thought I did pretty well for not coming out of the bullpen all year."
Prior to his demotion to the bullpen Miguelez had been struggling with "mental errors", but he vows to put those behind him.
"I fell into a little slump," said Miguelez, "It was a lot of mental errors in my fielding that was carrying over into my pitching. That can't happen and you have to be able to block that off. That is the adjustment I have to make. It is nothing physical, it is just stupid mental things."
With Miguelez on the mound Sunday they will be looking for their first sweep since March 17-19 against
Duke
and their first home sweep since March 10-12 against
Virginia Tech
.
"It is really important to win because we have
Wake Forest
coming in next week at home."
"Now I have my starting job back and I just have to do the job," Miguelez said.
