CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Scott Maine and Jon McLean combined for a one-hitter as the Miami Hurricanes defeated Wake Forest 13-1 in front of 1,610 in attendance. The #23 Hurricanes improved to 33-16 on the season and 15-10 in the ACC.
(9-2) allowed just one hit--to the first batter of the game--in seven innings. He struck out a career-high 11 batters allowing one run and three walks on 99 pitches.
"Today I felt like I had the best stuff I've had all year," Maine said. "After the first batter I felt pretty good. I gave up a lead-off double and after that I settled down and got some outs."
"He pitched an outstanding game," said Miami head coach Jim Morris, who won his 1,000th career Division I victory. "He stayed ahead of the hitters most of the hitters and when he didn't he came back and got them. We played solid defense behind him and it was a very good effort by our club."
RF Tommy Giles broke the game open with a two-run triple in the fourth inning to give the Hurricanes a 5-1 lead. Giles scored two batters later when 3B
extended his hit streak to 10 games.
"It was a pretty big hit on a 3-2 pitch," Giles said. "We had a lead, but the game is never over until its over, but that gave us an extra bit of momentum."
The two teams traded runs in the first inning when their respective leadoff hitters got on base and scored on sacrifice flies.
The Miami half of the first ended when CF
was thrown out at home. 1B
hit a groundball to the second baseman who misplayed it allowing Alonso to beat the throw. Jay tried to take an extra base, but was thrown out as
1B Allan Dykstra sent the throw home just in time.
Jay appeared to be safe on the head-first slide prompting Miami head coach Jim Morris to argue the call to no avail.
Miami took a 2-1 in the second inning when LF Dennis Raben hit a towering pop-up that appeared to be going foul, but stayed in fair territory as Wake Forest All-American third baseman Matt Antonelli was unable to make the catch. C
was running hard on contact with two outs and scored from second base on the error.
was 1-for-3 and is batting .500 (14-for-28) in his last seven games. LF
, a starter for the majority of the season, came off the bench to record a double and a triple with three runs batted in.
Dykstra, Wake Forest's freshman phenom, was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. He entered the game as the ACC's leader in home runs (14), slugging percent (.726), and on-base percent (.502).
"Maine pitched a great game," Dykstra said. "We got him early, but he stepped back and started hitting his spots. He was beating us and we were chasing pitches he wanted us to chase."
"They pitched me well," he added. "They kept going in and out and throwing off-speed to keep me off-balanced. They pitched well against me, I can't really say anything else."
(6-4, 3.69 ERA) and Wake Forest LHP Eric Niesen (3-0, 3.30 ERA) are the probale starters for tomorrow's game at 7:00 p.m. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive an un-cut sheet of player cards. Four seniors will be honored prior to the game on Senior Night.
"We just have to come back and play the same way we did tomorrow," Morris said. "We have to get good starting pitching--that is the name of the game."
