Grant: More freedom in new defense

Chavez Grant

Chavez Grant talked about how he was still learning how to play the position last year and how excited he is to be getting going again this season. CanesTime.com caught up with him to talk about the latest.

Q: How was practice today?
A: Practice went well. The offense moved the ball pretty well, but the defense buckled down when we needed to. Van Dyke made a lot of plays. He dropped a couple of picks, but he played real well. I feel I did not do as well today as I have been playing so far. No one really stood out, we just played well as a team.

Q: Is practice easier now that DeMarcus Van Dyke and Bruce Johnson are back?
A: I guess you could say that. Bruce and DeMarcus add a big dimension. They have a lot of speed and add depth to the corner position. They also let the safeties slide back to their more natural positions.

Q: Are you looking forward to the scrimmage tomorrow?
A: Of course. I am excited to get out there and compete. I am just going to go out there and have some fun. We are all going to try to win.

Q: How are the DBs doing right now?
A: We are all just helping each other right now. I am having a great spring so far. Bruce and DeMarcus coming back helps a lot. We are all competing and pushing each other.

Q: How was last year for you?
A: Last year I was still kind of young. I was still trying to get more knowledge of the game. I really learned how to play the nickel position. Now that I moved outside I can apply a lot of what I learned at the nickel position out here. I feel like I had a decent season last year and I am just trying to get better.

Q: What are the differences in the new defense?
A: The difference is we have a little more freedom. Last year, we were always pressing. This year, we are playing off, playing some zone, and playing man. It is a little simpler and it is a fun defense.

Q: There has been a lot of talk about your play this spring. What makes you so successful in a zone defense?
A: I do not know. I think it is my instincts. I have more agility than speed. I feel I am quick so that helps me get a jump on the ball and make some plays.

Q: How do you guys deal with having so many players?
A: We just try to teach them as much as we can. We work them hard in practice so they will be ready for games. The older guys are just trying to teach them and tell them how to fix their mistakes.

Q: How have the QBs looked so far?
A: The QBs are looking good. They are all young and learning the offense, but they are throwing well. They have been solid this spring.

Q: What are your goals this spring?
A: I just want to get better and push my teammates. I want to help the young guys and compete every single practice.
