Canes 28, Wake Forest 27

Posted Oct 31, 2009

19th-ranked Miami traveled to Wake Forest on Saturday and didn't play one of their best games. Still, they did just enough to defeat their ACC opponent by the score of 28-27.

Jacory Harris threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, as Miami pushed their record to 6-2 on the season. Wake Forest fell to 4-5.

It was a slow start for the Hurricanes, as Wake Forest got out to a 10-0 first quarter lead thanks to excellent play by senior quarterback Riley Skinner. He connected with freshman fullback Tommy Bohannon for a first quarter score and later had a seven yard run in the first half to give Wake a 17-0 lead early in the second.

That's about when Miami woke up. From that point on the Canes outscored the Decons 28-10. They cut the lead to six by halftime, thanks to a 35-yard touchdown catch by Aldarius Johnson and a three-yard touchdown run by junior running back Damien Berry.

Wake opened the scoring in the third when Skinner hit Chris Givens on a 44-yard touchdown stike, giving Wake a 27-14 lead going into the fourth quarter. Tervaris Johnson and Travis Benjamin each caught fourth quarter touchdown passes from Harris to give the Canes a one-point lead. A last minute drive, led by backup quarterback Ryan McManus, fell short for Wake as their 60-yard field goal attempt on the game's final play was way off.

The Canes won, despite giving up 555 yards of offense to a Wake Forest team that had scored a total of 13 points in their previous two games. Miami got just 26 yards on 21 carries so it wasn't pretty.

Miami is now 3-2 in the conference and plays host to Virginia next Saturday.
