Other Cardinals farmhands in the top 100 are second baseman Kolten Wong at number 57, up from 127 last year, right-handers Trevor Rosenthal at 69 and Michael Wacha at 94. The latter two are not only making their top 100 debuts, but also their initial top 300 placements. Of course, Wacha was just drafted in June.
Among those Cards in the second 100 are right-hander Tyrell Jenkins at 145, one year after placing 92nd. First baseman Matt Adams improved his position from 208 last year to 168 here in 2013. At 178, third baseman Carson Kelly is the second member of the Cardinals' 2012 draft class to debut.
In the final 100 is another short-season prospect like Kelly in Charlie Tilson. The 20-year-old outfielder, injured in 2012, appears for the first time in the national top 300 at number 248.
The Cardinals' 2013 total of ten is up from nine one year ago. The four new to the list in 2013 are Wacha, Rosenthal, Kelly and Tilson. The three who departed are graduating Lance Lynn, traded Zack Cox and disappointing reliever Eduardo Sanchez.
The national top five, including the two just ahead of Taveras, are Baltimore pitcher Dylan Bundy and Texas shortstop Jurickson Profar. Right behind are a pair of hurlers – Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole and Seattle's Taijuan Walker.
Last year's top five - Rays pitcher Matt Moore, Angels outfielder Mike Trout, Washington outfielder Bryce Harper, Braves hurler Julio Teheran and Mariners catcher Jesus Montero – all graduated to the bigs.

A reminder. Earlier this off-season, we counted down the Cardinals top 40 prospects for 2013 and analyzed the selections in a series of annual articles called "40 Days, 40 Nights, Forty Prospects" here at The Cardinal Nation.
As you might expect, the same prospects that make up the Cardinals system's top eight also appear on the national top 300 for 2013. In addition, you can access our Cardinals top 40 from each of the previous seven years via the "Site Extras" area at the lower left of our home page.
Related announcement: Kiley McDaniel has hired to be our national baseball writer, replacing Frankie Piliere. Kiley has an extensive background, having worked in the baseball operations departments of the Pirates, Orioles and Yankees, and written extensively for ESPN, Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs. If you are like me, you are already familiar with his scouting reports and draft work alongside Keith Law at ESPN. Kiley is a great addition to FOX.
